Entities & the knowledge graph

Also known as: entity SEO, sameAs, brand entity

Being a thing a machine recognises — a company with a name, an address and confirmed profiles elsewhere — rather than a string of characters that happens to appear on a page.

In plain English

Search engines and AI assistants organise the world as entities: people, companies, products, places. "Citaim" as an entity has properties and connections; "citaim" as a string is just letters. Being recognised as the former is what lets an assistant answer a question about your company confidently.

For a small or new brand this is usually the real bottleneck. Not that the content is weak, but that the machine cannot yet tell that the company on your site, the one on Companies House, and the one on LinkedIn are the same organisation.

How to fix / set it up

  1. Publish Organization structured data on the homepage: legal name, logo, URL, and sameAs for every profile you genuinely control.
  2. Make the name, address and company number identical everywhere they appear — including the footer, the About page and third-party profiles.
  3. Give the company an About page that states plainly what it is, where it is registered, and who runs it.
  4. Earn mentions on sites the engines already trust, rather than building profiles nobody reads.

Structured Data Checker

The technical detail

Structured data is how you assert it: an Organization block naming the entity, with sameAs pointing at the profiles that confirm it — Companies House, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Wikidata where it exists. Consistency of name, address and phone across those sources is what turns an assertion into a confirmation.

Entity recognition compounds slowly and pays off broadly. Once the connection is made, mentions anywhere on the web start contributing to the same entity rather than dissolving into ambiguity.

Do not claim connections you cannot back up. sameAs pointing at profiles that are not obviously yours is worse than omitting it, and a Wikidata item created about yourself is not a substitute for being notable enough to have one.

FAQ

Do I need a Wikipedia page?

It helps enormously and cannot be manufactured — notability is judged by editors, not bought. Companies House, LinkedIn and industry directories are the achievable version of the same signal.

Is structured data enough on its own?

No. It is a claim. Confirmation comes from the consistency between your claim and independent sources.
