Google AI Overviews & AI Mode
Also known as: SGE, Search Generative Experience, AI snapshot
The AI-written summary Google places above the normal results, with a handful of linked sources — often answering the question so completely that nobody scrolls.

In plain English
Ask Google something explanatory and you increasingly get a written answer first, with a few source links beside it. The ten blue links are still there, underneath. For a lot of questions, that is now the part nobody reaches.
This changes what a good position is worth. Ranking third for a question whose answer is fully given at the top can produce fewer visits than it did a year ago — while being one of the cited sources in that summary produces visits and, more importantly, being named as the recommendation.
How to fix / set it up
- Answer the question in the first two sentences under a heading that matches how it is asked.
- Keep the facts an engine would repeat — numbers, definitions, criteria — in plain sentences rather than inside images, tables of icons or PDFs.
- Keep ranking work going: Overviews mostly cite pages that already rank for the query.
- Add
FAQPageorHowTostructured data where it genuinely matches the page, so the extractable parts are unambiguous.
The technical detail
Overviews are grounded: the model retrieves live search results and writes from them, which is why cited sources usually rank on the same query. They are also volatile — they appear for some queries and not others, change between sessions, and vary by country and device.
They are effectively unmeasurable from the outside at scale. Overviews render client-side, vary per user, and Search Console reports their clicks inside ordinary web performance rather than as a separate row. Anyone selling you an exact AI Overview share is estimating.
Traffic from an Overview arrives with google.com as the referrer, indistinguishable from an ordinary organic click. This is the single biggest blind spot in AI-visibility reporting, and any honest report says so rather than quietly attributing the difference elsewhere.
FAQ
Can I opt out of AI Overviews without leaving Google?
Not selectively. `nosnippet` and `max-snippet:0` suppress the text Google may use, but they also remove your normal search snippet, which usually costs far more than it saves.
Why did my traffic fall while my rankings held?
That pattern is the fingerprint of an Overview answering the question above you. Compare impressions against clicks: impressions steady with clicks falling is the shape to look for.
Does being cited in an Overview count as a ranking?
No. It is a separate selection made at answer time from retrieved results, which is why it can include a page that ranks below others.
