AI referral traffic & attribution
Also known as: ChatGPT referrals, Perplexity traffic
Visits that arrive from an AI assistant — a small, high-intent trickle that most analytics setups quietly file under "direct", and a serious undercount of the influence behind it.

In plain English
When someone clicks a link inside an AI answer, your analytics may see chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai as the referrer. These visitors tend to be unusually far along: they have already had the comparison explained and are checking you rather than discovering you.
The trap is treating that number as your AI visibility. It is the visible fraction of it. Most answers end without a click, and Google's AI Overviews send traffic that looks exactly like ordinary organic search.
How to fix / set it up
- Add an explicit AI channel grouping in your analytics rather than letting these hosts fall into "referral" or "direct".
- Report it as a floor, with the Overviews blind spot stated in the same sentence.
- Measure presence in the answers themselves by sampling, and treat referral traffic as a separate, complementary number.
- Watch conversion rate rather than volume — a small AI channel that converts well is worth more attention than its size suggests.
The technical detail
Practical hosts to watch: chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com, claude.ai. Some assistants strip the referrer entirely, so those visits land in direct traffic with no way to recover the source.
Google AI Overview clicks arrive as google.com and cannot be separated from ordinary organic clicks. Any tool claiming an exact AI Overview figure is estimating, and a report that does not say so is misleading you.
Because of that floor, referral counts are a lower bound on influence, never a measure of it. Reporting them as a share of voice number overstates precision and will eventually be caught out.
FAQ
Why is my AI referral traffic so small?
Because the answer usually satisfies the question. Low click-through is the normal outcome of being cited, not evidence that citation is worthless.
Can I tell which prompt sent someone?
No. The referrer carries the host and nothing about the conversation.
