In plain English
There is no position one in an AI answer. There is only: were you named, and how often. Share of voice turns that into a number by asking the engines the same set of buyer questions many times and counting how often each brand appears.
Two numbers matter and they are different. Presence rate is how often you appear at all. Share of voice is how much of the total naming across all brands is yours. A brand can be present in most answers and still hold a small share if competitors are named alongside it every time.
How to fix / set it up
- Write buyer questions, not brand questions. "Best CRM for a small charity" measures visibility; "What is Acme CRM" measures nothing.
- Fix the question set and keep it fixed, adding new questions as new questions rather than edits to old ones.
- Sample repeatedly and report a range, not a single figure.
- Track competitors in the same run, because share is meaningless without the denominator.
The technical detail
The measurement is a sample, not a census, and the honest version of it says so. Answers are non-deterministic: the same prompt run twice can name different companies. A single run is an anecdote; a stable estimate needs repetition across prompts, engines and days.
Sample size drives everything. Three prompts on one engine cannot separate a real change from noise. The arithmetic is unforgiving — measuring five engines against twenty-five questions three times each is 375 answers per cycle, which is why credible tracking is priced by volume.
Comparability requires holding the question set still. Changing prompts mid-quarter produces a chart that moves for reasons that have nothing to do with your visibility, and that chart is worse than no chart.
FAQ
Why does my score move when I changed nothing?
Because the engines are non-deterministic and their indexes update continuously. That is why a credible report shows a trend across repeated samples rather than a number for today.
Is presence rate or share of voice the better target?
Presence first — you cannot take share of an answer you are absent from. Share becomes the useful number once you are named consistently.
Can I measure this in Google Analytics?
No. Analytics sees visits, and most AI answers produce no visit at all. Being named without being clicked is the normal case, and it is still worth something.
