Language and country in AI answers

Also known as: locale, multilingual GEO

Answers change with the language they were asked in and the country they were asked from — so measuring in one and selling in another tells you about somebody else's market.

In plain English

Ask the same question in English from London and in Polish from Warsaw and you will often get different companies, different sources and a different tone. The retrieval step is localised, and the training data is not evenly distributed across languages.

For a business selling in one country this is a detail. For anyone selling across several, it is the difference between a report that reflects the business and one that reflects wherever the tracking happened to run.

How to fix / set it up

  1. Decide the languages and countries the business actually sells into, and track those.
  2. Record both variables next to every number you report.
  3. Write, rather than translate, for a market you intend to win.
  4. Make locale versions unambiguous with hreflang and self-referencing canonicals.

The technical detail

Two variables move independently: the language of the prompt, and the location the request appears to come from. Both need to be held fixed and both need to be recorded, or a change of tracking provider silently changes the results.

Local sources dominate local answers. Being cited in a Polish answer usually means being present in Polish-language sources, which is content work rather than translation work — a machine-translated page reads as a machine-translated page to a quality system.

hreflang and locale-specific pages matter more here than in ordinary search, because the engine has to decide which of your versions is the source for a given answer, and ambiguity gets resolved by picking someone else.

FAQ

Will an English page be cited in a Polish answer?

Sometimes, when nothing better exists in Polish — which is also the opening a local competitor will close.

Does a country-code domain help?

It is a clear signal, but a well-marked subfolder on one strong domain usually beats several weak country domains.
