Zero-click answers
Also known as: no-click search, answer without a visit
The normal outcome of being cited: the reader gets what they needed inside the answer and never visits you — which is worth something, and worth measuring differently.

In plain English
A citation that produces no visit feels like a loss if you are counting sessions. It usually is not. The reader asked a question, your brand was given as the answer, and they carried that away. That is the same thing an advertisement buys, except that here it arrives as a recommendation.
The mistake is to value the channel by its clicks. The mistake in the other direction is to pretend clicks do not matter at all; some of your content exists to be visited, and for that content a zero-click answer really is a loss.
How to fix / set it up
- Label each key page: reference (fine to be consumed inside the answer) or destination (needs the visit).
- Give reference answers away completely and clearly.
- For destination pages, describe the value plainly and keep the thing itself on the page.
- Report the two classes separately, with different measures of success.
The technical detail
Split your pages by intent. Reference material — definitions, specifications, opening hours — should be given away inside the answer; competing against that is losing an argument with the reader's convenience.
Pages whose value needs the page itself — a calculator, a tool, a configurator, a data set — should be *described* rather than fully reproduced, so the answer names what you do and the reader still has a reason to arrive.
Measure them differently. Reference pages are judged on presence rate and citation share; destination pages on referrals and conversion. Averaging the two produces a number that flatters one and buries the other.
Do not fight zero-click by withholding the answer. A page that refuses to answer is not retrieved, and the engine simply quotes somebody who does — losing you the citation as well as the visit.
FAQ
Is zero-click bad for business?
It is bad for a session count and often good for a pipeline. Being named as the recommendation to a buyer who is deciding has value whether or not it produces a visit that week.
Should I gate content to force a click?
Not to win citations. A gated page is not retrievable, so it is not quoted; you have removed yourself from the answer rather than monetised it.
